There's a myth that a good scene needs conflict on every page. But some of the most unforgettable moments in literature are quiet: a cup of tea going cold, a hand hovering over a doorknob.
When I write a quiet scene, I ask three questions: What does the character want in this exact second? What are they pretending not to feel? And what small object can carry the weight of it all?
Trust the reader. Give them the salt, not the whole ocean.
